A Different Drummer

As the summer temperatures rise in Austin Texas, many teenagers day dream of water skiing at one of the local lakes. But not 16 year old River Bryant. His dreams have been focused on another continent. He set his sights on raising enough money to serve at the Treasures of Africa Children’s Home in Moshi, Tanzania. He plans to take with him his skill as a drummer, honed in long hours of high school band practices and competitions.

The teen comes from a very musical family and as the son of pastors of The Bridge Church in Austin, he has often used his musical gift in church. Recognizing that Tanzanian churches often have a hand drum as their ONLY musical instrument, River knew it would be a great idea to teach the T.O.A. kids the skill of drumming. Many of the children at the orphanage have already shown an interest in playing the hand drum and they compete amongst themselves to be the one who plays the drum during their singing and worship times. But T.O.A. owns only a single drum, and holding a “class” in drumming would be a difficult without purchasing more for the students and teacher to use.

We would like to purchase a minimum of 10 hand drums for the orphanage. They will be used for this special “drumming class” and then will remain at T.O.A. for the children to use in worship services at their local church and at the orphanage during their daily devotions. If you would like to purchase a drum for the orphanage, send a simple gift of $20 to HWCM and note “Drum for T.O.A.” in the memo line of your check or online at www.treasuresofafrica.org. Be a part of this fun summer project and invest in the special kids at Treasures of Africa Children’s Home as they learn a skill that they will enjoy for a lifetime!
